So, after I got my password reset (and redownloaded the launcher), I decided to check in on the current build of Legends of Equestria. After all, the game was updated quite a bit since I last tried it, since there was nothing to do but go get my plot kicked in the Everfree. So then, let’s see how this went.

Back when I played this before, I naturally made an avatar in game, but that character was gone when I checked. Though, that doesn’t actually matter; I’ve since created a new OC that I wanted to use instead. So, I present the Crystal Pony Swift Sapphire.

For those who saw my RPG challenge entry, his hair does completely cover his eye like this.

And so, once again, I enter the world of ponies. In Ponyville-sorry, Ponydale. Gotta say though, can’t wait to head to the Crystal Empire, if it’s even in this build. Rollcage technology. Again, Crystal Pony.

Though, I did find the train station, and I even saw a player get off. Though, I think we may have a spy in the player base..

We got a changeling who’s gotta work on her disguises.

So, I started my life as a pony in front of the school, and I was soon given a few tutorial quests. I did enjoy the last quest: going around town and asking fellow earth ponies what makes us special. Cool idea. Though, this brings me to one of my major complaints with the game:

Let me explain: that minimap up there? That’s all you get. No way to get a larger map, and zooming in just enlarges the map in that small circle. Plus, the only real marks on the map are the quest markers, so it doesn’t help that much for direction. Oh, and after dying in the Evershade again (we’ll get to that), my map glitched back to the Ponydale map, with my arrow marker constantly spinning.

Speaking of the Evershade, the next “story” quest just happens to take place there. I basically followed a whole bunch of goals into the dangerous forest in search of a werepony. Oh sweet Luna, even LoE is against me this Splatfest. Still, it was a very enjoyable quest, mainly due to the nice interactions with the other kids.

However, going into this forest brings up my other issue: the combat. I am very glad there’s more stuff to do in the game, but this aspect still sucks hard. I swear lock on doesn’t work, either instantly disappearing, or locking into a FRIENDLY pony like another player. Even worse, or possibly as a result, I get zero feedback for hurting enemies. I get feedback on my own damage, which is nice, but every time I fight something, I feel like I’m not even hitting my target. And then I die.

Look, I fully understand that combat isn’t a focus of this game. In a setting like Equestria, it shouldn’t be. Even so, if combat is going to be a thing in this game, it needs to be better. Even Stardew Valley got its combat right, and that’s a farming game.

Though, if I can avoid the enemies, I can see some cool stuff. Like this.

Reminds me of Remnant’s moon. It just needs a few broken pieces.

Finally, let’s end off on my final major issue with this game. At some point, I returned to the teacher who gave me the tutorial quests..and found I could use her to decide my special talent. Cool! So, what are my choices?

This is..really disappointing, especially from a role play perspective. First of all, no combat option, even though combat is a least a skill tree. However, more importantly, Swift Sapphire’s actual special talent isn’t close to any of these. Sure he can fight (or he’s supposed to), but under normal circumstances he is a mail pony, and that’s simply not an option. There isn’t even a speed talent option, since that’s a major factor to what makes him a good mail pony (and the bane of perishable packages). I fully understand the game may have limits, but I’m not allowed to truly role play as my OC.

So, what are my final thoughts? Well, the game’s off to a good start. It’s great to finally have quests and ponies in Ponydale, since that alone finally makes visiting this world enjoyable. However, it still has problems. The combat is still the worst I’ve seen in any game (I’m sorry, it just is), and I can’t make my avatar into the pony he’s supposed to be (though he at least looks the part, that’s a plus). Hopefully, these issues will be fixed or expanded on in later builds. The game still needs work, but I’m looking forward to seeing it improve.
