Gaea Mobile Limited’s StormFront 1944 is one such game and although it doesn’t exactly capture the war’s brutality considering that it has a light-hearted theme, it’s a decent strategy game that incorporates a few of its peers’ gameplay elements.

There is no bloodier war than World War II, and it’s the source of inspiration for many a developer to base their games on. Gaea Mobile Limited’s StormFront 1944 is one such game and although it doesn’t exactly capture the war’s brutality considering that it has a light-hearted theme, it’s a decent strategy game that incorporates a few of its peers’ gameplay elements. With that said, is it something unique or is it another cookie cutter “strategy game” that is actually filled with microtransactions? Let’s find out:
StormFront 1944’s storyline follows the events of D-Day in Normandy, wherein the Axis powers are on their last-ditch efforts to somehow win the war. Meanwhile, the United States, Soviet Union, and the British are out to finish it. After which, you will need to choose a side in the war, which plays a crucial role considering each side has different troops. The countries include Germany, the United States, the Soviet Union, Great Britain, Japan, and China.
With that said, don’t expect much of a story, considering that you will immediately be diving straight into the meat of the game. You will be brought into the tutorial which orients you about the game’s basics. You will be taught how to build your base from the ground up, building the usual structures like lumber mills and upgrading your gold depository. Being an RTS game, it involves a ton of timers. Structures are free when the time left to construct them is under five minutes, but the same cannot be said when recruiting units. Of course, you will need gems (which are given in generous amounts) to speed everything up.
StormFront 1944’s campaign is rather shallow. The single player experience does not change regardless of your choice of country. For example, you will get to fight the British, even if you chose the United States (both are allies in World War II). This severely breaks the immersion aspect and it would have been best if we were given different campaigns for each country.
Nevertheless, the campaign brings you to StormFront 1944’s most sought-out gameplay element which are the battles. Basically, you will be invading enemy-held towns to capture them. To do so, you will need to deploy your units in a staging location around the town’s proximity. The goal is to destroy the command center which is usually in the middle of the battlefield. Your units will move forward and attack everything on their path, from defensive structures and enemy units. You can help them out through tactical bombing: an ability wherein a plane drops a bomb on a place you’ve directed. It’s best used on defensive structures.
Although StormFront 1944 sounds a lot similar to other RTS titles, the game itself is pretty fun. However, you will need to look past the timers and microtransactions in order to even think this. Even if you want to play more of it, the restrictions it imposes, as well as the timers dumbs down the overall experience. For example, you need to have a level three command center to build more structures and recruit more units. It’s incredibly frustrating, and it feels as if the game doesn’t want you to play it.
Overall, StormFront 1944 is a decent RTS game. It’s incredibly fun, but its restrictive elements cuts the experience short. If you have a lot of patience and can deal with timers, it’s absolutely a must-play. However, if you’re not the type who likes short bursts of gameplay, it may not fit your cup of tea.
