I was seriously underwhelmed by this work. At a high level, I think it's great that there's a new publication that presents a case for the biological and genetic drivers of human evolution even during the recent historic period. I certainly agree with this perspective, and it adds a nice layer of evidence to other recent popular works dealing with human history in the Holocene. The devil is in the details, however, and this is where the book comes up short.I was very frustrated by this book's I was seriously underwhelmed by this work. The devil is in the details, however, and this is where the book comes up short.I was very frustrated by this book's orientation very firmly in the 'popular science' genre rather than being more scientifically rigorous. There were far fewer citations than appropriate, and many claims were presented as fact without a shred of supporting evidence. Far too often, the authors (Cochran and Harpending) resorted to descriptions like 'completely obvious' or 'undoubtedly' to refer to their own arguments and 'simply incorrect', etc.

Because I have to take meds I dont have a snowball's chance on a hot day. However, factor that out of the picture and I still probably would not survive for too long. I will NOT eat bugs and certain animals. I will eat plants, fruits and vegatables (assuming I am lucky enough to stumble upon them), but one wrong wrong plant and its game over.:'(Then there is the whole shelter issue, getting skins from wild animals, dealing with no youtube, etc.

I mean seriously, could you really get to sleep with things crawling all over, bloodsuckers flying around to drain you dry, man eating animals, 90% humidity and no air conditioner? Oh yeah, did I mention disease lurking everywhere and difficulty finding water? If I did manage to survive at least a year, the aforementioned would be enough to drive any modern man insane. Are you man enough for 10,000 BC? 10,000 BC isn't actually that long ago, life was still relatively the same as it is now, there weren't dinosaurs or anything. So I'm suddenly in the Canadian wilderness, let's make it spring to be fair since winter would just be death. I've got the things I usually carry, so a pocket knife, wallet and keys.Yeah I could 'survive'. There's plenty of edible bugs; worms, ants, moths. Could just mush them up and add some maple syrup.

As long as I can make a fire and boil some water with pine needles within a few months that should avoid most nutritional deficiencies.Very likely given 9 months of trying before winter I could kill sufficient animals to make winter clothes, though I don't know how to tan hides so they'd probably stink horribly.I think it would be fairly important to domesticate some animals, after some thought it would probably be best to start with a mountain goat or sheep because they're the least aggressive. I'll need to get a young one shortly after it's weaned from its mother since I have no way of providing milk for it. Project eden. Once I have the goat I can milk it and domesticate other animals from a younger age, including hopefully a wolf cub who should make a suitable companion and protector.
